ULTRA HORNET Detail Page

The ULTRA HORNET cutting machine is designed for heavy duty high definition and conventional CNC plasma cutting well as heavy duty oxy-fuel cutting. Innovative heavy duty design and superior components enable customers to select up to four plasma cutting systems with up to 400 amp output for production cutting up to 1-1/4" (32mm). Up to eight oxy-fuel torches and one plate marker may also be added.

ULTRA HORNET CNC cutting machines are available in 6 ft to 16 ft in widths. Lengths of 100 ft or more can be supplied.

      CNC Control Console
The Retro Systems CNC control uses the Phoenix PC based motion control software designed specifically for the metal cutting industry by Hypertherm, the world leader in plasma cutting technology.

Our open architecture PC from Hypertherm enables the use of a Dell 15" LCD TOUCH SCREEN monitor and a wireless keyboard and mouse. Open the drop-down door on the front panel of the control to access the Floppy Drive, CD-ROM/DVD and USB port.

The 15” Dell LCD flat panel monitor is mounted into the left side of the inclined console face plate. Oxy-fuel and plasma operator controls and switches are mounted on the right side of the face plate. A roll out storage drawer is placed conveniently under a large desk top work surface. All side panels of the console are removable to access the servo drive amplifiers and rear connections to the PC.

With unparalleled ease of use, the Phoenix screens prompt the operator to select material type, material thickness, cutting amperage and gas selection from the CUT CHART screen. Process Parameter tables within the Phoenix software set and control cutting process and motion control variables delivering Total System Integration.

68 shapes in the library, Point & Click import of CNC files from a network or memory stick, on-screen basic nesting and the power of a PC running Windows XP, make the Retro Systems CNC control ready for production.

          SENSOR Plasma torch height control
The SENSOR™ THC is a full featured precision plasma torch height control system specifically designed to integrate with Hypertherm CNC shape cutting controls. The SENSOR THC incorporates the latest advancements in system integration and hardware reliability. With integrated SoftMotion and closed-loop servo control, the SENSOR outperforms all other THCs. The SENSOR is easy-to-use and will significantly increase the productivity and profitability of your shape cutting operation.

The machine operator selects Material Type, Process Current, Plasma/Shield and Material Thickness in the CNC control Cut Chart screen. The Phoenix CNC software retrieves cutting parameters from Look-Up Tables stored within the CNC control. Cutting speed and THC parameters are set and automatically maintained during the cutting cycle. When interfaced to a Hypertherm HyPerformance Auto Process plasma system, the CNC control automatically sets and maintains the correct plasma and shield gas flows as well.

    Heavy Duty Oxy-fuel Gas Manifold
The Retro Systems Heavy Duty Oxy-fuel Package enables high quality plate cutting by delivering precise control of the preheat flame and the cutting oxygen ramp up rate. This package delivers rapid pierce times, excellent cut face surface, reduced spatter during piercing, elimination of top edge rounding and optimized cutting speeds.

The Oxy-fuel Operator Panel includes switches to manually select the plasma, oxy-fuel or marking process. Once selected, the oxy-fuel cutting process may be controlled automatically by the CNC control or manually by the switches on the panel.

High preheat fuel and oxygen pressures are set at the cylinder regulators, while low preheat fuel, low preheat oxygen and cutting oxygen pressures are set at the gas manifold. The rate that cutting oxygen pressure increases during the pierce is set by the Pierce Rate Control knob.

Rail System, Back Deck & Cable Carriers
The ULTRA HORNET rail system is 68 lb per yard Tee-Rail machined to a tolerance of .001" width. Each section is tongue and grooved on the ends to insure precise alignment. Heavy duty 8"x8" square tubing pedestals and square tubing cross member insure a stable rail structure.

ULTRA HORNET machines include a large back deck for plenty of room to mount the components required for high definition and high power plasma systems and up to (8) oxy-fuel torches. Large enclosed flexible cable carriers are used on the main rail and individual carriers on the back deck deliver cabling to the cross axis carriages.

    Tool carriages

    Master carriage

    Slave carriage

    Band Drive

Tool Carriages - Master & Slave
ULTRA HORNET cross axis beam includes a rack and pinion driven master carriage and up to (7) additional slave carriages. Carriages move on hardened & ground Vee ways set 11" apart for extreme rigidity. Slave carriages clamp to a stainless steel band drive system which is driven by the master carriage movement. The master carriage may carry up to (3) tools. Each slave may carry either a plasma or oxy-fuel lifter station and torch.

    AC Servo Amplifier

    Planetary gear head

    Servo motor

Servo Amplifiers, Planetary Gear Heads & Servo Motors
ULTRA HORNET machines use 1,350 watt AC amplifiers and servo motors coupled directly to 5 arc minute In-line planetary gearboxes to deliver superior motion control and acceleration. Speeds of 1,000 IPM are obtained with very low backlash. Machine positioning and repeatability are excellent.

About "Arc Minutes" and gear boxes:
  • One rotation equals 360 degrees
  • One degree is divided into 60 Arc Minutes
  • One arc minute equals 1/60 of a degree
  • One revolution equals 21,600 Arc Minutes
  • One arc minute equals 0.0000462 revolution
  • Five arc minutes equal 0.000231 revolution of the pinion gear
  • Five arc minutes equal .0018133 inches of machine travel

In other words, the ULTRA HORNET looses a maximum of 0.0018133“as it takes up backlash when changing direction. Additionally, we designed extremely rigid motor mounts that do not contribute to backlash (see the section below for details). All this results in more accurately cut parts and holes that are much more round !!

The ULTRA HORNET uses large 2.5" diameter pinion gears to deliver exceptionally vibration free motion which translates into smother cuts.

  •       Motor mounts
Proper drive pinion gear engagement is critical for precise motion control so we designed a very robust mount to deliver guaranteed performance. Our linear engagement design is far superior to machines with a pivoting motor mount.

Our motor mount is machined from two large blocks of aluminum. Bronze bushings inside the motor mount plate and (2) round ways set into the motor mount base insure precise alignment and rock-solid pinion gear engagement.

Our Auto-Load tensioning system insures pinion gear pressure is always correct. Merely back off the adjusting screw and the integrated springs set the perfect pressure

          Side-Draft Air Table
Our optional Side-Draft air table includes a Side-Draft Nozzle which is attached to the cutting machine end truck. The Side-Draft Nozzle picks up suction from the Air Exhaust Tube which runs the length of the machine. The suction in the Air Exhaust Tube causes the dual rubber belting to seal against the Side-Draft Nozzle as it moves along the rail.

Slots cut into the side wall of the cutting table permit air flow into the Side-Draft Nozzle. When plate is laid on the slats, smoke and spatter are drawn between the slats into the Side-Draft Nozzle.

The cutting table bottom is lined with standard concrete patio blocks to protect the bottom of the table from molten metal and heat. Replacements are available at your local lumber yard.

          Other Cutting Table Designs
Retro Systems also offers Zoned Down Draft Tables and Customized Water Tables. Ask us for details.

          Dust Collectors
Retro Systems offers Micro Air® dust collectors with our Side-draft air cutting tables for a "Turn-Key" installation. Four, six or eight cartridge dust collection units are specified to provide the correct air-to-cloth ratio and insure efficient operation depending on material thickness to be cut and the cutting process.
